National Girls and Women in Sports Day

MACOMB, Ill. — Western Illinois University Athletics is preparing to begin celebrating National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) during events in Western Hall on February 1, 2025. The annual observance of NGWSD, which officially takes place on February 5, 2025, honors the achievements and contributions of female athletes, coaches, and leaders in the world of sports.

As part of the celebration, Leatherneck Athletics will host several activities on Saturday, February 1, during the men's and women's basketball home doubleheader against SIUE. 

The scheduled events for Saturday, February 1, include:

9:00 - 11:00 am: Cheer Clinic in Brophy Hall

1:00 pm: Women's Basketball vs. SIUE

Includes in-game statistics and recognitions 

YMCA girls basketball scrimmage during halftime

3:30 pm: Men's Basketball vs. SIUE

Halftime performance by Cheer Clinic participants 

All local girls basketball teams are invited to attend Saturday's games compliments of WIU Athletics. Email Shelby Borchardt (sb-borchardt@wiu.edu) by January 30 to secure tickets. These activities aim to inspire and empower the next generation of girls and women in sports while emphasizing the positive impact of sports on personal development, teamwork, and leadership.
